References in APA Style

Citing reference works in APA  format (7th edition) is much like citing a chapter in an edited book.

General Format  

Author. (Year). Title of entry. In Title of reference work (# ed, pp. ##-##). Publisher. DOI or URL.
  • For online reference works that are continually updated and are not archived use "n.d." as the year and include a retrieval date. 
  • If the author and publisher are the same leave off the publisher name. 
Example (Print):  American Psychological Association. (2015). Mood induction. In APA dictionary of psychology (2nd ed., p. 667).
Example (Electronic): American Psychological Association. (n.d.). Just-world hypothesis. In APA dictionary of psychology. Retrieved January 18, 2020, from https://dictionary.apa.org/just-world-hypothesis

Lastname, A. B. (Year). Title of book. Publisher Name. DOI Link or URL.
Example (Print):  Sapolsky, R. M. (2017). Behave: The biology of humans at our best and worst. Penguin Books.
Example (Electronic): Jackson, L. M. (2019). The psychology of prejudice: From attitudes to social action (2nd ed.). American Psychological Association. https://doi.org/10.1037/0000168-000.

General Format  

Lastname, A. (Year). Title of article. Title of Journal, Volume(Issue), pp. # - #. DOI link.
Example (Electronic): Grady, J. S., Her, M., Moreno, G., Perez, C., & Yelinek, J. (2019). Emotions in storybooks: A comparison of storybooks that represent ethnic and racial groups in the United States. Psychology of Popular Media Culture8(3), 207–217. https://doi.org/10.1037/ppm0000185
